Published History of 100 Squadron Royal Air Force

100 Squadron is one of the oldest squadrons in the Royal Air Force. An excellent source for historical details of 100 Squadron is the book 'The Hornet's Nest: A History of 100 Squadron Royal Air Force 1917 - 1994'. This is a splendid book written by Arthur White who flew with 100 Squadron during World War II. Arthur has also produced a Supplement to the main volume which covers the years 1994 - 2000. Both of these books can be purchased from us; for details see the Memorabilia section in the Membership Page.

Members can also find an excellent account of 100 Squadron in World War I in 'The Annals of 100 Squadron' by Major Gordon Burge OBE. This book provides a record of the activities of 100 Squadron during the period March 1917 until November 1918.

'Night Bombing with the Bedouins' by Robert Henry Reece was originally published in 1919, although has recently been re-printed by the Battery Press in the USA.  It is one man's story of his time with the Squadron on the Western Front, and makes very good reading - many of the squadron personalities of the time are described in detail, which is something you don;t get with the straight history books.  Well worth trying to get hold of.

Ian Reid's book 'Lancaster Operations - One Squadron's Contribution to the Bomber Offensive' is a superb account of 100 Squadron's bomber war between 1943 and 1945. This book, which concentrates on 100 Squadron's Lancaster period during World War II, contains many excellent photographs and personal accounts from the crews who flew the Lancasters from Waltham and Elsham. The book can only be obtained direct from Ian Reid. For details please contact Association Secretary Keith Ellis, or the Association Webmaster Damien English.

For those interested in the Victor era, a highly recommended book is 'Handley Page Victor' written by Wg Cdr Andrew Brookes, who was a Victor pilot. Although this book does not deal specifically with 100 Squadron, the squadron is mentioned several times. Additionally, there are photographs of Victors in 100 Squadron colours and markings. This book is in the Post War Military Aircraft series published by Ian Allan Ltd.
